well. I had to dissect a cat today. in case you don’t know I’m not uh idk fake obsessed with cats because it’s in or whatever. I’ve had cats almost my entire life, I called my dad’s mother cat grandma (she had tons of cats), the only books I took out of the library as a child were cat books. Blah blah basically I’ve never met some one else who loves cats as much as I do, except maybe my old roommate at NYU. Regardless I think the cat dissection should not be required for nursing majors, or for anything. It is the most fucked up, barbaric, awful, sickening thing I have ever had to do. We were given no alternative option because the biology department thinks it’s 100% necessary. I guess I could have protested and gotten a zero, I definitely wish I had.
I heard that at a lot of other schools the cats come pre-skinned so they look like aliens. And that’s what I was expecting, but I got to lab today and saw plastic bags filled with fully intact cats. Many cute black and whites like my Shadow. The one I got was a large male and it looked very similar to Gizmo. The first thing we had to do was cut off their tails with a bone saw, which as you can imagine makes a really horrible crunching noise. Then we had to skin them. We made incisions across the neck and then down the dorsal side all the way to the tail. Then we had to separate the skin from the muscle layer below. It wasn’t easy. You have to put a lot of energy and it makes horrible sounds, and you see fibers ripping. I’ll never get it out of my head. If you do it right the skin comes off in one piece, like a little jacket. We did all of this to look at/separate oh I don’t know, seven muscles? Some of which humans don’t even have. Is that really fucking necessary? Could we not have looked at a textbook or maybe a video or anatomical model or ANYTHING? apparently not.
The teacher justified it by saying the cats didn’t die for us, they were already dead and we were lucky to be able to use them like this. It’s not like they were sick cats or old cats or cats who were in pain and needed to be put down. They were healthy shelter cats, euthanized because there isn’t enough room in shelters. And by the way the euthanizing process is NOT painless for the animal in case you thought it was. I don’t know. I already cry when I see the “72 hours until termination/to be terminated tomorrow” posts from shelters. Next time you buy a cat from a breeder or try and get your cat to have kittens (I know a girl that did this) just remember there are perfectly healthy (often times purebred) cats in shelters who are on death row. I didn’t mean for this to get so preachy, but after today I hate humans even more. I don’t know why we think we are so entitled to destroy whatever the fuck we want. No one give me bullshit about how this is for the betterment of mankind or anything. Two hundred idiot college students poking around at a mutilated animal doesn’t better anything.
